The Environmental Justice Elements Planning Initiative is a collaborative effort between San Mateo County and the cities of Burlingame and East Palo Alto to promote environmental justice within each jurisdiction. The project involves identifying communities that are disproportionately impacted by environmental and health hazards – such as exposure to air pollution and unsafe housing conditions – and creating policies and actions to address those issues.
Community engagement is critical to ensure the policies and actions address the environmental justice issues experienced by community members in their daily lives.
